Pipeline Technology Journal: Tackling corrosion and leakage by retrofitting pipelines with fiber optic sensors

24/02/2023

In April, 2022, we shared our expertise on tackling corrosion and leakage in existing pipelines using fiber optic sensing in the Pipeline Technology Journal. In the article Thijs Lanckriet, Thomas Van Hoestenberghe and Timothy Van Caelenberghe from Fluves, elaborate on two systems that address corrosion under insulation of insulated pipelines (CUI-CONTROL) and leakage or intrusion detection of underground utility pipelines (DALI).

CUI-CONTROL CASE STUDY AT BASF

On the one hand, the application range of the CUI-CONTROL system, a system to monitor corrosion under insulation with a fiber optic cable attached to the outer cladding of the insulated pipeline, offers the big advantage that the insulation or cladding does not need to be dismantled to install the monitoring system. We demonstrated the system at use at a BASF site in Antwerp.

THE DALI SYSTEM IN USE AT FARYS

On the other hand, the DALI principle detects leaks and third-party intrusions in underground pipelines, inserting a fiber optic cable inside the pipe. The DALI system is highly suitable for retrofitting utility, steam, oil and gas pipelines. We successfully tested the DALI system at FARYS.
